It’s Friday, it’s May 17th, it’s only one more sleep till Eurovision erupts in Malmo, when Bonnie Tyler rises up from a sea of blinky choruses & Lithuanian grannies and takes the Euro-crown for the UK! And before you raise an eyebrow at your screen and tell me that the UK has no chance of winning now that Europe has been cut into 426 pieces with a rusty cheesewire and everybody hates us, let’s take a look at the video and indeed, the song choice… Continue reading

Singles Club
Welcome back to Singles Club, a safe place on the interweb free from any mention of the new Pope. Apart from that one. But it’s OK, because Pope Francis is a Man Of The People and his favourite popster, Nicole Scherzinger, also happens to be first up in this week’s roundup. Coincidence? You decide… Continue reading
Brit Awards 2013 – Live Blog!
Welcome one, welcome all to the 2013 Brit Awards! Live from the O2 Arena! In London! Next to the river! And the cable car! I’ve already stepped onto the red carpet so you don’t have to – selfless I’m sure you’ll agree – and have been flitting about the venue all day long, soaking up the atmosphere and star-spotting fairly unsuccessfully. But I have touched those giant images of the Damien Hirst-designed new awards that look like they’ve got jaunty chickenpox; and I have marvelled at the spectacle of the Brit Awards that have had me hooked since I was 11 years old. I’m excited, you should be excited, so stop back here from 7.30 tonight for live coverage of the red carpet and the awards, set to feature live performances from the likes of Justin Timberlake, One Direction and Robbie Williams. Scream now… Continue reading
Goodbye Songs
Awkward. That’s what people being made redundant is – especially people you actually like. There’s the awkward moment when they tell you they’re being canned. The awkward emotional tangle of emotions while your facial expressions struggle to keep up. The awkward speeches, awkward cake-eating, awkward card-signing. It’s, well, a bit awkward. Recently some colleagues of mine left work and I was sad to see them both go. They’re both solid blokes. So, because I express my emotion via the medium of music (in a cosmic way, of course), I made them a playlist for their final day in the office. I don’t really know if it was appreciated, but they at least smirked. Sometimes in life, that’s all you can hope for, right?
Access my playlist here on Napster. Spotify is so 2012. Goodbye Playlist
Bebe Black – Deathwish
Now we’ve firmly kicked 2012 off a cliff and laughed as it flailed about in the water, let’s welcome in the new. That’s right, new things like, erm, bacon-flavoured mayonnaise, woollen high heels and freshly squeezed music like Bebe Black. Sure, she might have a moniker that makes us recall Frasier’s tawdry agent but her new track Deathwish is a glorious riot of a tune, part-electropop, part-dance, part-louche chic. “I gave myself a year to make it in music after moving to London,” said the West Country twentysomething recently. “But now it seems to be actually working…”
2012: Best Singles
I love a great single. That moment when vocals and melody meet in mid-air, french kiss and roll around on the rug with not a care for who’s watching or listening. This year has been home to a few rocket-fuelled solo tracks from the likes of Gotye, Carly Rae Jepsen and Fun, but who’s romped to the top of the pile to take my coveted Top Track title? Read on my friend… Continue reading
2012: Best Albums
Farewell then, 2012. You brought us the London Olympics and the Queen’s Jubilee, which made us all feel royally fabulous. You were also a glittery disco ball of musical merriment, with a number of standout albums and more than enough pop fragments to snag our attention. Before you evaporate completely from our memory, let’s look back with no anger and more than a scoop of love. And before you ask, no there is no Frank Ocean in the list because while Channel Orange had its moments, it was terminally long and dare we say it, dull – not an accusation you level at any of this lot…
Whitney: Didn’t She Almost Have It All?
As the ever-more saddening images of Whitney Houston’s final days and hours are thrust into focus via the tabloids, I can’t help but want to push them from view – but the multiple pile-up that was her life of late seems impossible to look away from. For a girl who grew up in the 80s though, Whitney represents whirlwind teenage years – and to me and my mates, her lyrics seemed to spell out the life that was to come for us all… Continue reading
Emeli Sandé – Our Version Of Events
2012 is most definitely London’s year, but it seems to us that it could also be a landmark 12 months for Emeli Sandé. The Scottish singer has already been named as the Critics’ Choice at this year’s Brit awards, following in a long line of success stories including Adele and Jessie J. Having had her debut album on rotation for the past few weeks, I can tell you that award is richly deserved – Our Version Of Events is an album stamped with quality, Sande’s glorious vocal talent soaring throughout…
