Looks like all is not well in the royal kingdom of Leon. After describing themselves as “utterly depressed”, the quartet have cancelled their US tour following their abruptly halted performance in Texas at the weekend, when singer Caleb Followill left the stage to be sick and never came back. The frontman initially claimed sickness, then dehydration and exhaustion but his brother, bassist Jared Followill has since stated: “There are bigger problems in our band than not drinking enough Gatorade.”
It’s no secret that the family band of three brothers and a cousin have always had their disagreements, especially after their mega-selling Only By The Night album in 2008 when they rowed about sticking on the commercial road or heading back to their bluesy roots. Follow-up Come Around Sundown did neither one nor the other and failed at the check-out. Now it seems that the band – and specifically singer Caleb – need a break to sort out their issues, although they’ve insisted since the announcement that they’re not splitting up.
After the Texas show, Drummer Nathan Followill said: “We’re ashamed and embarrassed by last night’s fiasco and can’t apologise enough.” His brother Jared surmised: “There are internal sicknesses & problems that have needed to be addressed… It’s completely out of my hands. Family has to come first.”
Kings of Leon are set to resume their tour in Vancouver on September 28th.
