MTV Brand New For 2012

Want to know who you should be listening to in 2012? Then you could do worse than lend an ear to MTV’s Brand New for 2012 acts and events. This week they announced the final 2012 nominee and for the first time ever it’s an unsigned artist. Norwich-born urbaner Context will go head to head with the other nine shortlisted artists – Lana Del Rey, Michael Kiwanuka, Angel, Clement Marfo and the Frontline, Conor Maynard, Delilah, King Charles, Lianne La Havas and Charli XCX. Who will win? Well you can vote for your favourite now, with the overall title being announced on February 1st…

Over 2,500 unsigned artists entered the MTV Brand New for 2012 unsigned competition, but it was Context who caught the judges eye. With a dubstep & hip-hop feel that’s bang on the money, Context is inspired as much by the low-key Bristol sounds of Portishead and Massive Attack as London-based producers like James Blake, The Streets or Burial.

Context – pictured above looking mean and moody – said: “Everything I’ve achieved up until now has been just me, in my bedroom, making the kind of music I wanted. To start off 2012 by winning this is incredible. I’ve been so humbled by the overwhelming support of everyone voting for me and to the guys at MTV. I’m so thankful.” Not ever so rock n roll, we agree, but his mum would be proud all the same.

On January 24th & 25th, MTV is set to host two exclusive gigs showcasing nominated artists and established UK stars at London’s KOKO. On the 24th, headliners The Maccabees will play tracks from their critically acclaimed new album Given To The Wild. Also performing that night will be Lana Del Rey, playing material from her hugely anticipated debut album released the same week, as well as hotly tipped electro-goth pioneer Charli XCX. Then on January 25th, BBC Sound of 2012 Poll winner Michael Kiwanuka will join songstress Delilah in support of this year’s BRIT Awards Critics’ Choice winner, Emeli Sandé. For tickets go to:
