Tuesday Tips: Write What You KnowThis advice is the first that's doled out to new writers. However, don't take it at face value. You write from what you know into a place you don't know. That's the magic of writing.Write what you know relates to facts, experience, emotions and feelings. It also relates to what you can learn and *then* know.So yes, write about your dad's red Ford Cortina estate with the traffic-light air freshener. Write about the fear of walking into your first gay bar. Write about the gut-wrenching pain when that first woman broke your heart. But also, write about women from 1958, as I am in my new book, Big London Dreams. I wasn't alive then, but I know how it feels to kiss a woman for the first time. To dance with a woman. I am trying to find some Monday Motivation this morning after a weekend of catching up with friends, then bingeing The Bold Type on Netflix. It was the best! Coffee isn't really working and I keep shutting my eyes to blink but they keep turning into mini naps. I consulted Dr Google on how to stay awake, and the suggestions were "sleep better the night before." Thanks for that, I'll just grab my time machine and off I'll go. The other one is exercise, but I've already done my yoga and even hoovered my office already this morning. Go me! Moving to get more coffee sounds like a fine exercise plan now.
