2008: Best Singles

Putting together three or four minutes of musical perfection is no mean feat, but 2008 has thrown up some sparkling gems from the pop rubble. Here’s our pick of the singles of the year, headed up by a trans-atlantic love story and a spot of memory loss…

1. Estelle ft Kanye West – American Boy

She liked this American boy and frankly so we did we. Cool tune, great rap from Kanye and so modern it hurt, Estelle proved she was the comeback kid of 2008 with this track that ran and ran all year.

2. The Ting Tings – That’s Not My Name

Their breakthrough single was a storming indie pop track that chastised the male-dominated record industry and galvanised fans the world over. All together now: ‘They call me hell, they call me Stacey…”

3. Chromeo – Needy Girl

2008 has been a great year for Chromeo, characterised by the single Needy Girl, a joyous slice of 80s-influenced synth-pop that’s reminscent of Colonel Abrams’ Trapped and Timex Social Club’s Rumours. Unmissable.

4. Hercules And Love Affair – Blind

New York disco meets baroque pop as Antony Hegarty lends his distinctive vocals to this lot’s debut single.

5. Gotye – Hearts A Mess

Put together over two painstaking years, this track drips melancholy while managing to be touchingly uplifting.

6. Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown – No Air

Pop perfection sung out by the American Idol winner and Chris Brown, this has heartbreaking lyrics wrapped around a gloriously swooping chorus.

7.  The Game ft Lil’ Wayne – My Life

Enticing melody, poignant lyrics, tattoos aplenty. What’s not to like?

8. Taio Cruz – C’Mon Girl

The US-based Brit took off his writer/producer hat this year to turn performer. This is a storming club track, the essence of fun bottled in three fat minutes.

9. Girls Aloud – The Promise

Shimmering silver dresses, a spectacularly easy dance routine and a 60s-infused vibe meant that this was sung around the country long after it fell from the top spot.

10. Noah And The Whale – 5 Years Time

Fantastic summer track from the folk/pop group with a sentiment that slays cynicism. We loved this from the get-go.
