Happy International Coffee Day!

Today is International Coffee Day, 24 hours in which we get to rejoice about everyone’s favourite murky brown liquid. So just why do we love coffee so much? Here are ten piping hot reasons…

10 – It’s cool

When was the last time you saw someone drinking a coffee and looking uncool? That’s right, never. If you want to hang with the cool kids, it’s time to go cray cray for coffee.

9 – It’s loaded with nutrients and antioxidants

Put down your kale & blueberries and pick up your coffee is the message from health boffins. Coffee is the biggest source of antioxidants in western society, beating fruit & veg combined. No, we don’t know what an antioxidant is either, but it sounds impressive doesn’t it?

8 – It wakes you up

You wake up. You are still asleep. You drink coffee. Ping! Without coffee, most of us would still be asleep right now, fact.

7 – It’s fun seeing how many ways Starbucks can spell your name

I mean seriously, I’m sure the staff are just taking the piss, right?

6 – It can make you a top athlete

Sports scientists know that a cup of coffee before a workout jolts athletic performance. Of course, if you’re rubbish to start with, a coffee will not turn you into Usain Bolt/Jess Ennis-Hill. Soz.

5 – It stops your liver packing up

Multiple studies have shown that coffee can lower the risk of cirrhosis by as much as 80%, the strongest effect for those who drank four or more cups per day. Matching each cup with a glass of wine is frowned upon, however.

4 – It makes you smarter

Coffee improves memory, reaction time, vigilance and cognitive function. In short, you might as well start bathing in the stuff RIGHT NOW.

3 – It smells great

Want to sell your house fast? Put on a pot of coffee when buyers walk through the door. It’s a known fact that the smell of coffee makes us happy, because your brain knows that caffeine is on its way. And that makes your brain giddy with excitement.

2 – It helps you burn fat

Coffee is a metabolism-booster, meaning that if you drink it every day, your system gets kicked into going 10 per cent faster than your green tea-drinking buddy. Who’s looking smug now?

1 – It tastes delicious

There’s just no getting around it – coffee is da bomb. Happy International Coffee Day!
